Color in furniture finishing

Color is very important in the wood finishing industries. All the finishing process is purposed to make color to the product. With the finishing technology that is available now, we can make thousand color finish for wood finishing. But according to its color, the wood finishing color can be grouped into 2 types: the solid color or opaque color, paint color and transparent color or wood color. Solid color finish is the type of wood finish when the finishing material totally cover and block the underneath wood color. The color in the paint finish is fully build by the color of the stain applied on.

While the transparent color is the finish when the finish still show the wood color and looked.  At the transparent finish we can still can see the basic color of the wood and also the grain and pore pattern. The stain used at this finish is blended with the basic wood color and built the final color. In the transparent color, the final color is made by the combination of the wood stain and the basic color of the substrate.

Solid color is created by the application of enamel stain, paint or base coat stain. The thick stain is used to layer on the wood surface and built a thick film of paint.  The base coat is the most used to make paint color. It is could be single or mixed pigment that is mixed with thick binder and added with some sanding agent. The base coat is also be able to act as sealer, he can be sanded to make the smooth and even surface. While enamel is he mix of pigment with top coat. The enamel can be applied to the last coat. But the enamel does not contain the sanding agent, then it is quite difficult to be sanded.

Transparent color is the wood color. The finish still show the character and the base color of the wood or substrate. It is the best choice finish for the wood, plywood or veneered panel that has beauty grain and pores. The best transparent finish not only show the wood color, but enhance and maximize the beauty and uniqueness of the wood. The transparent finish combine the wood element as as: basic colors, pores and grains pattern to make the "good looking" wood product.

Transparent color is the best choice to finish the premium wood such as : teak, walnut, mahogany, etc. The wood stain for the transparent finish is the thin solution. It is the pigment that is solved in a solvent with very small amount of binder. When the wood stain is applied on the wood it will absorbed by the wood. The pigment will blend and mixed with the wood color to build the finish color.  The more stain penetrate the wood, the more stain enhance the wood pores and grains. The the stain can be applied by dipping, brushing or pouring into the surface then wiped. The more stain penetrating and then more it will color the pores and grain to produce more naturally color and enhance the beautiful feature of the wood.

The preparation of the unfinished product is very important to make perfect finish result, especially when we make transparent wood color. The stain that is applied directly to the wood will reveal the wood condition. If there any imperfectness on unfinished product such as: dent, scratches, uneven surface, soft wood, glue mark or dirt  will be seen clearly in the finishing looked. Some soft wood such as: sengon, aghatis or pine wood, has high risk to get the blotchy color. Some pretreatment may be needed to minimize the staining problem. The preparation with  sealer sizing or glue sizing may be needed to get the good finishing result.
